The Art of Carpet Care

Keeping a carpet clean is the only way for it to remain effective. Below are the dos and don’ts of some aspects of carpet cleaning.

Spot Cleaning

When spot cleaning you can either do it by hand or use an extraction machine.  To start apply chemical and gentle agitate towards the center.  Allow time to dwell.  For hand spotting don’t rub the spot, just blot it.  Rinse with clean water.

Do’s and Don’ts
  • Don’t use to much chemical or soil will attract back to the carpet.
  • Don’t use a coloured cloth or the colour will transfer to the carpet.
  • Don’t use the wrong products on the carpet or it will permanently damage the carpet fibers.
  • Do rinse the carpet.  If you don’t rinse the stain will come back

Vacuuming

For best results use a carpet groomer to provide agitation.  Make sure to vacuum all areas, even those underneath furniture, trash cans, etc.  Spot vacuum any furniture or upholstery.  Make sure to change the vacuum bag and clean the filter regularly.

Do’s and Don’ts
  • Do change the bag and clean the filters regularly.  If not done the vacuum won’t pick up debris properly

Spin Bonnet Cleaning

Thoroughly vacuum and remove spots. Mix the cleaning solution and place the wet floor signs. Spray carpet with the bonnet cleaning solution in a pressure sprayer. Spray bonnet or soak bonnet in the cleaner. Overlap your passes flipping, changing or rinsing the bonnet as needed. Allow appropriate dry time before traffic.

Do’s and Don’ts
  • Do use a clean bonnet.  If the bonnet is dirty it will grind dirt back into the carpet.
  • Don’t use the wrong chemical or the carpet will re-soil.
  • Don’t over wet the carpet or it will take too long to dry.

Prespraying

Vacuum area thoroughly and remove spots. Mix prespray in a pressure sprayer and place wet floor signs. Spray carpet with a prespray solution in the pressure sprayer. For best results use a carpet groomer to provide agitation. Allow 5 minutes dwell time before proceeding with cleaning.

Do’s and Don’ts
  • Don’t prespray too large of an area or the prespray will dry up.
  • Do prespray your carpet or it may not be properly cleaned.
  • Don’t over mix the chemical or the carpet will attract soil.

Extraction

Vacuum thoroughly and remove spots. Mix the cleaning solution and place the wet floor signs. After prespraying use the double pass method and overlap your passes. Allow proper dry time before traffic.

Do’s and Don’ts
  • Don’t over wet the carpet because there will be a long dry time.
  • Don’t run out of solution or you will leave streaks on the carpet.
  • Do overlap your passes or you will leave streaks on the carpet.
